Often it is
VERY noisy inside a tent. Sometimes, specially at
night, the wind is very strong, the waves roar and the
the canvas of the tent is fluttering like a machine gun.
Then it is impossible to copy weak signals and probably
somebody in the cluster spots, there are DEAF OPERATORS :-)
Even the noise of birds can interfere with weak
CW-signals !
So think, before
you are spotting "informations" like this. Those
operators, comfortable at home, often have no idea, what
an operator on a DXpedition is just going thru.
An other important factor is the LOCAL QRM. On a small
island like Aves it is sometimes very difficult to have
a clear frequency, due to activities in other modes on
the same band or spurious transmissions from other
bands. Those things happen, even with bandpass-filters,
as we ALWAYS use.
On this
expedition we had a lot of problems caused by a military
transmitter, which transmitted periodically a digital
data broadcast, which paralyzed the reception of ALL our
station for 3 to 5 minutes. |
